Severe Storms Threaten Georgia with Flash Flooding and Tornadoes

A powerful storm system is expected to move slowly across Georgia on Sunday and Monday, bringing heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and the potential for isolated tornadoes. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued multiple weather alerts, warning residents of life-threatening conditions.

Key Threats

1. Flash Flooding

   • A Flood Watch is in effect for North and Central Georgia, including Atlanta, from Sunday morning through Monday evening.
   • Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with some areas possibly receiving up to 5 inches due to slow-moving storms.
   • Urban areas, creeks, and low-lying regions are at high risk of flooding.

2. Damaging Winds & Tornadoes

   • A Tornado Watch is in place for Atlanta and West Georgia until 7 PM Sunday.
   • Wind gusts could reach 70 mph, strong enough to down trees and power lines.
   • While the tornado risk is low (Level 1 of 5), brief, isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

3. Hail & Power Outages

   • Some storms may produce pea-sized hail.
   • Prolonged heavy rain could lead to localized power disruptions.

Safety Precautions

• Avoid flooded roads—just 6 inches of fast-moving water can sweep away a vehicle.
• Stay updated via NOAA Weather Radio, local news, or the AJC Weather page.
• Charge devices in case of power outages.
• Secure outdoor objects that could become projectiles in strong winds.

Government Response

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has directed state agencies, including the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), to monitor the situation closely. He urged residents to "take proper precautions now" and follow trusted weather sources.

Recent Context

This storm follows last week’s heavy rainfall in Atlanta, which helped clear the city’s record-high pollen levels. However, the new system’s slow movement increases flood risks significantly.
