iOS 18 makes iPhone more personal, capable, and intelligent than ever
iOS 18 beta: Customizable home screen, photo apps and more new updates for your iPhone
Apple has announced iOS 18, which brings more customization options, a significant redesign of the Photos app, and better ways to stay connected. The update aims to make the iPhone more personal and capable.
iOS 18 beta 1: Here’s what features are included
Customization and Control
iOS 18 lets users customize their Home Screen by arranging apps and widgets wherever they want, including above the dock. Users can choose light, dark, or tinted effects for app icons and widgets, and can make icons larger for a minimalist look.
The Control Center has been redesigned to offer easier access to frequently used controls, such as media playback, home controls, and connectivity. Users can add controls from third-party apps, customize the layout, and create new control groups.
For the first time, users can change the controls at the bottom of the Lock Screen, with options available in the controls gallery. The Action button on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max provides quick access to these controls.
Photos App Redesign
The Photos app has received its biggest redesign yet, making it easier to find and relive special moments. A single view displays a familiar grid and new collections organized by themes. Users can pin collections to keep favorites accessible and enjoy a new carousel view that updates daily with highlights.
Enhanced Messaging
iMessage now includes new text effects that animate letters, words, phrases, or emojis. Users can format text with bold, underline, italics, and strikethrough. Tapbacks have been expanded to include any emoji or sticker, and users can schedule messages to send later.
Messages via satellite allow users to send and receive texts when cellular or Wi-Fi connections are unavailable. This feature uses existing iPhone satellite technology and ensures end-to-end encryption for iMessages sent via satellite.
Mail Improvements
Later this year, Mail will introduce on-device categorization to sort incoming emails into Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions. A new digest view collects relevant emails from a business for quick access.
Safari Updates
Safari has new Highlights and a redesigned Reader experience. Highlights use machine learning to surface key information about a webpage, while the new Reader provides a summary and table of contents for longer articles.
Passwords App
The new Passwords app, building on Keychain, makes it easy to access passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes. The app alerts users about common password weaknesses and data leaks.
Privacy Features
iOS 18 offers more control over who can see apps, how contacts are shared, and how iPhones connect to accessories. Users can lock or hide apps to keep content private. They can also choose to share specific contacts with an app and connect third-party accessories without exposing all devices on their network.
Apple Intelligence
Deeply integrated into iOS 18, Apple Intelligence enhances writing and communication. New Writing Tools help users rewrite, proofread, and summarize text across various apps. The Image Playground feature allows users to create images using animation, illustration, or sketch styles. Memories in Photos lets users create stories from their photos and videos by typing a description.
Apple Intelligence aims to transform the iPhone experience with useful and relevant features built with privacy in mind.
